  1. Level, low-lying tracts of land in E England,
  2. W and S of the Wash, about 115 km/70 mi N-S
  3. and 55 km/34 mi E-W. They fall within the
  4. counties of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, and
  5. Norfolk, consisting of a huge area, formerly
  6. a bay of the North Sea, but now crossed by
  7. numerous drainage canals and forming some of
  8. the most productive agricultural land in
  9. Britain. The peat portion of the Fens is
  10. known as the Bedford Level. The first
  11. drainage attempts were made by the Romans.
  12. After the Norman conquest a 100 km/60 mi long
  13. earthwork was constructed as a barrage
  14. against the sea. In 1634 the 4th earl of
  15. Bedford brought over the Dutch water-engineer
  16. Vermuyden, who introduced Dutch methods.
  17. Burwell Fen and Wicken Fen, NE of Cambridge,
  18. have been preserved undrained as nature
  19. reserves.
